Of all days, your birthday is supposed to be a blue sky holiday. (Where it’s written that it’s supposed to be like that I’m not sure but I believe it’s written somewhere.) But today was just the opposite and it started out pretty bad very early in the morning with an email.
Instead of smiling and laughing all day as nosy Nellys asked me my age and I checked my voicemail to hear friends singing “Go Sheena, it’s your birthday” (Yes, I’ve watched Chasing Amy one too many times.) I was just annoyed and repeatedly disappointed all day. Too make things even more dippedy doo dah, I couldn’t even meet any of my friends after work for a drink. I know, boo-hoo for me. But trust me when I say I’m sure you would have been annoyed also.
So today, besides a brief break where I had breakfast with Laura at Petite Abeille, the strange events of the day continued until she packed me into a cab at 6:30 and I arrived home over an hour later (hit the worse traffic EVER!!!) with the unexpected birthday greetings that arrived at the office.
I didn’t have the energy to make the personalized Happy Birthday cake edible greeting sent to me from Patty Sach of PattyCakeGreetings.com (distributor of The Greeting Cake Company). The greeting cake kit which makes a 4″ individual sized cake using a microwave oven even came with confetti (non-edible) and a little pink candle! It’s very cute. So I offered Natalie a few birthday cookies I picked up from a bakery on the way home, she of course took the one with pink sprinkles. And she asked if she could “hold Mama’s flowers.” It’s hard to stay sad or upset around her.
After the kiddos went to bed, a friend called and tried to serenade me with her rendition of Happy Birthday. I told her I was too frightened of her voice to sit through it and begged her not to sing. It was a joke of course because I’ve never heard her sing. But now that I think I about it, how cute is it for her to have offered to sing in order to make my day better.
After all that, I still am going to bed with a migraine. Next year will be better. I’m sure of it.
