Flower Power

Natalie’s great grandmother had a birthday yesterday.

I didn’t know. I have an excuse. Abuelita is their paternal grandmother.

Every week, I’ve been trying to get the kids to visit with their Grandma Jenny.

During last night’s dinner at a lovely Long Island restaurant with her, I came up with an idea.

Send the woman some flowers. From her great grandchildren.

Easier said than done.

You can’t exactly send flowers to South America through 1800 Flowers

Then again, I wouldn’t use 1800 Flowers even to send flowers to Brooklyn.

(I’ve never seen a floral arrangement from them worth the price anyone paid.)

I asked Natalie’s Grandma Jenny for a number of a good florist in Bolivia.

And today the call was made.

A few hours ago, Abuelita thought someone was playing a joke on her.

Apparently with the exchange rate ($7.80 pesos bolivianos to $1US), the arrangement that arrived was pretty large.

I wasn’t going for a grand statement. I just wanted her to know the kids were thinking about her.

She absolutely loved the flowers.

Of course after I send the flowers, I find out flowers in Bolivia aren’t a big deal.

Six roses are like 3 pesos.

This explains the reaction to the flowers since Abuelita’s arrangement included every flower under the sun.

And now I’m just waiting to see a photo.

Their great aunt (Tia something or the other) said she’d have a photo emailed over.

I’ll update this post then.

I’m really interested in seeing what all the commotion was about.
