May 2008 Archives

It doesn’t surprise me to hear the Sex and the City movie is getting bad reviews from critics.

In the past, I’ve chosen to see movies the critics didn’t particularly favor.

So I’ll eventually see the movie but I know what to expect.

You can tell the SATC movie was going to be exactly how the critics found it.

One long, mediocre SATC episode which should have aired on HBO.

And, they did that already .. it was called the series finale.

But just in the case of the finale, the movie will be a success.

Sex and the City was part of the pop culture and single women embraced it.

Hell, as disturbing as it may be, teenagers and my grandmother loved the show.

So when the movie is released this Friday, it will be a bonding ritual for many.

To go and see how Carrie has been with Big, to see if Miranda is happy in Brooklyn.

But if you look at it was, it will be a good trip down Sex and the City lane.

Until of course, the Sex and the City sequel comes out.

In the meantime, I’ll just see the first Sex and the City movie and have some fun.

Why?  Because it’s still Sex and the City.

Marriages are falling apart all around me.
Too sad. So heartbreaking. How awful.

Because it all begins with a wedding.
And happiness. After cake and dancing.

Now its talks of separation and divorce.
With children caught in the middle.

Sometimes I wonder if they know something we don’t.

I always have these big plans for my Sundays.

And one day I will get through my mother of all to do lists.

Because I have this goal is to get a real head start on my work week.

But instead I -

Attempt to clean the apartment, but it will never be spotless.
With three kids underfoot I can only be so ambitious.

Remember to check the answering machine. Finally.
Listen to my cell phone voicemails – from weeks ago!

Respond to emails. Reduce my Outlook clutter. Trash junk mail.
Write reviews, segment outlines and a pitch or two.

Pick up socks without a partner. Pack the laundry.
Change sheets and pillow cases and even put away shoes.

Stretch underneath the kids’ beds to reach their bedtime books.
Find Nat’s library books. See a half eaten banana. Ew.

Empty the fridge. Make a grocery list.
Declare this to be the week, I order out less and create more from scratch.

And then take the kids to the park – the zoo – for an ice cream cone.

As a parent of a girl, there are two days I’ve always wanted to delay the arrival.

(OK more than two but only two I feel like talking about now.)

I wanted to hold out on Nat getting her ears pierced.

Until she asked.

Says the chick who had six piercings in one ear and three in the other.

Really.

Not to worry, that day still hasn’t arrived.

And I wanted to postpone the inevitable tea at American Girl Place.

Not that we haven’t had tea elsewhere.

Or we haven’t been invited by American Girl Place for special events.

But the idea of opening her up to the world of $200 dolls, magazines, movies and matching clothing seemed a bit much.

Even for my crazy Native New Yorker “over the top” standards.

But the reservation is confirmed.

July 18th is the day I go broke.

Nat and her friend Gracie will be having a birthday tea.

At American Girl Place. On Fifth Ave.

Thanks to HotStuff Jessica. Some friend she is.

Just kidding, I totally understand her reasoning.

Bring on the pink lemonade!
