A few weeks ago I was asked if I would participate in spreading awareness about a new initiative between Glad — the brand of trash bags I already buy at my local supermarket — and New York Compost — a company I had no idea existed.

After I agreed to participate a compost kit, an assortment of Glad compostable trash bags and Composting by Nicky Scott arrived. The Glad compostable trash bags are made with 40% vegetable-based materials so they’ll disintegrate at municipal compost facilities.

A few years ago, I had thoughts of composting but didn’t have a backyard to use it in so I just stuck to my usual recycling practice. I’m happy New York Compost exists now as it makes composting in the city easy. The pickup route pretty much covers all of Manhattan, several parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

In addition to compostable trash bags, Glad is doing their part to waste less with a grants program. Here’s some info: *Glad is committed to supporting youth sports programs by providing 10, $2,000 grants and counsel from sustainability experts to help youth stadiums or sports leagues’ waste diversion efforts. Entrants will be asked to share a brief description of their need and plan to take their high school stadium, community fields or youth sports league “One Bag.” The grant entry period runs from October 18, 2011 through January 31, 2012. Grant submissions will be accepted atGladtoWasteLess.com

I kept my compost bin in the kitchen and filled it with peels from vegetables, fresh fruit, stems from flowers I cut before putting in a vase and a couple of slices of bread that had gone stale. I also put the paper towel tube and toilet paper roll tube in the compost bin as that cardboard will decompose. I didn’t put any scraps of cooked food in.

And now… I’m doing my part to help you waste less with this giveaway!
