Outdoor Fun

July 14th 2016

Having three active sons means I would be lying if I said I ever sat down.

Parenting boys means I have no shortage of opportunities to stay active throughout the day. From cheering them on as they create their own Olympics challenge using the park equipment to racing with them up the hill to see their friends; I feel like we spend more time outdoors than indoors.

One of our favorite summer activities is to have a dinner picnic. When the day’s temperature starts to cool off, we take dinner and games to have fun outdoors. Sometimes when we are lucky, our favorite neighborhood picnic spot also shows family friendly movies!

No matter our outdoor picnic plans, we always include beverages. My oldest son and I stopped in Rite Aid recently and picked up Ocean Spray® PACt® Fruit Infusions juice drink which combines juice, with 30 calories or fewer (per serving), plus cranberry PACs.

I know… I had never heard of PACs — proanthocyanidins — before, either. They are natural elements found in cranberries. By adding PACs to real fruit juice and purified water the (no sugar added!) juice drink has a fraction of the sugar and calories.

Ocean Spray® PACt® Fruit Infusions Cranberry Cherry Blueberry is a great tasting way to hydrate. And we may have gone back to Rite Aid and picked up the other three bottles that were on the shelf! Hey! When all four of your kids like something, you have to take advantage of it as long as possible!

You might be tired of hearing all of these reasons from your kids but there are actually a few that bear thinking about. Usually kids will tell you they need a cell phone because all of their friends have one but there are some real reasons you should look into the prospect.

Parental Control

One of the big things that may be putting you off getting a mobile phone for your child is what they could be accessing. Parental control to the rescue! Block off the things you don’t want them to access and monitor what they do with the phone.

You can password protect some elements of the phone, maybe if you only want them to contact you with it, and leave others intact. If you’re sharing a phone then you can unlock it and go back to using your phone as normal. Maybe you want to access mobile slots but don’t want your kids to and with these tools it needn’t be difficult. You can still play on your mobile device then block them out of the other parts of the phone before passing it off to them.

Give them Responsibility

Do you remember that childhood item that you cherished above all else? Give your children a chance at the same kind of responsibility with a phone. Make it clear to them that it is a privilege, not a given and that it can be rescinded if they don’t look after it. Aside from the ability to call you if they’re sick or lost, a phone can be useful for instilling some responsibility in the kids.

We all know how tough it is being the ‘bad guy’ parent all the time, so taking away the cell phone can be a hard step. Stick to your guns and your kids will be more likely to respect you for it.

Let them Keep in Touch

If you’re going through a divorce or separation it can be difficult to keep the family together at this time. If your partner has left the home then a cell phone can help your child feel like they’re still connected and in control.

Show them you Trust them

Even kids understand that a cell phone doesn’t come cheap, so by purchasing one for them you’re putting your faith in them. It doesn’t have to be a top of the range phone either, as it’s a symbol of you trusting them. Of course, this means that if they lose or break the phone they need to work hard to regain that trust again.

Social Interaction

Now this point on our list is a sensitive one and one that should be approached with caution. We know that kids spend more time talking online and over text message than in person during their teen years. You don’t want your child to be left out of all this interaction but you also don’t want to see them get into trouble, right?

Allow them a phone as a starting point but tell them it comes with conditions too. You should be able to check their messages, Facebook, Snapchat and anything else on there. If you think they may be deleting messages then check with your service provider for records. This might seem over the top but you can’t be too careful.

My nine year old has always loved one superhero more than others. He’s a big fan of Captain America. He even wore his Captain America Halloween costume three years in a row to school! And yes, if you were wondering, the photos ARE hilarious.

This year, when Marvel released the latest Captain America movie, my kiddo was found on the day it was released watching the latest installment with his dad. There was no way he was going to miss being on Team Captain America the first chance he got.

Although I’m divorced, I still help my children pick out Father’s Day gifts. My nine year old’s pick for his dad is the CROSS Marvel Century II pen. It’s part of the CROSS Marvel series of pens featuring Captain America, Iron Man and Spider Man. When your child thinks his dad is a real life superhero this is a fun way to honor him.

The pens are available in two styles. First the brand’s evolutionary Century II series ($150) finished in a high-gloss lacquer and includes a collectible, character-specific romance card. And the second is the Tech2 series ($45), which transforms from a ballpoint pen to a stylus in a flash.

Thanks to CROSS Pens for partnering with me for this post!

I went to my first thoroughbred horse race a few weeks ago. I’ve been invited many times but my schedule never allowed so I could attend a day at the horse racing track.

I got a crash course in all things track that day and loved it so much I took a peek this morning at the Grand National day 2016 odds & winners.

Sure we don’t have that race here in the States but the upcoming race season will be here before we know it on the East Coast and I know so many families were interested last year so here are four tips if you head to the track this spring for the first time, whether or not you bring the kiddos.

Dress up — or down!

While certain thoroughbred horse races might have a specific dress code for the most part you can show up dressed casual. That’s always nice considering my first race day was spent in ridiculously hot weather. Luckily, I was wearing a sundress and comfortable wedge sandals. But you will see people there in jeans and shorts as much as you see attendees in jackets and slacks and dresses with pretty hats.

Place a bet!

My first bet was on a horse with a New York City name because as a native New Yorker I felt like I had to root for the horse with a name that fit my hometown. But I also wagered on a horse I thought would definitely place. So two bets all afternoon — one silly one and one crash course educated bet. I was a beginner and still had fun because everyone else with me showed me what to do and how to come up with my picks. Beginner’s Luck really is a thing, people!

Take a seat — or don’t!

I had fun walking over to place bets and watching the races from the big screen but there were so many options of where to watch the races — from luxury suites and club house seating to picnic areas and bleachers. You’ll have a great time no matter where you see the horses leave the gate. After all, isn’t the purpose to have fun?!

Explore the track

No, I don’t mean walk on the race track during the races. I mean, see what else is there on race day. Most tracks have so many other activities. And since there is time in between the horses leaving the gates and the next race starting, I loved walking around. I had the chance to feed a carrot to the horse that played Sea Biscuit in the movie. Hey, we only live once. I can now cross “horse feeder” off my bucket list. (*wink*)  If you take your children, they often have play areas and places to ride a pony. At the track I went to… there was a huge bouncy house I was a bit envious of the kids jumping around in.

Most importantly have fun. If you’ve been to a horse race track and want to leave a tip below for other people attending this year, feel free to leave one in the comments of this blog post!
