Summer Streets 2012

August 11, 2012 by Victoria

We participated in Summer Streets today.

And by participated I mean we got out of bed at 9AM — after our heads hit the pillow at 2AM — and walked from our apartment to 72nd Street and Park down to Union Square. Crazy talk, I know.

Fox was my only kidlet able to take advantage of seven miles of traffic free Manhattan streets for a few hours. He walked a bit and then he sat in his stroller.

The final Summer Streets of the summer is next weekend. All four of my children will be home. Is it crazy to say I want to go back with all of them?

Can you believe I still don’t know how to ride a bike?! Everyone in the city who did looked like they were having a rockin’ time. There were even classes for people like me but they seemed to be on an extended break.

I took some photos of sights along the Summer Streets route.

There were rest stops every dozen blocks or so with bike repair stations, activities and music. At one of the stops we stopped to watch folk dancers who had to feel like it was 108 degrees in their costumes.

We walked close to 100 blocks to get to Union Square and then stopped. We figured it would be a good time to have lunch. After lunch at Duke’s we walked back almost 100 blocks back home.

Consider this blog post existing to be a miracle. Or proof blogging makes you crazy. You decide.

That looks like so much fun.  Wish that was on while we were all in town, I would have walked 100 blocks with you.

No way. I have never seen the streets to deserted! I wish I had been there, this sounds awesome (though undoubtedly a pain for those who had to park many blocks away from their home)

One mom. Four kids. A tiny NYC apt. Lots of love. And homemade cookies.
