As a belated birthday gift, I took my mother to the sold out Andrea Bocelli Central Park show last night. She’s quite the Andrea Bocelli fan and we’ve been going to concerts (Rolling Stones, Diana Ross) together since I was a teen.

When we got to the park entrance we were allowed in as soon as we got there because we had VIP tickets. We walked through a maze of barricades — passed the ready ambulances and police command stations into a cornered off area where were handed a bento box compiling of Italian snacks.

We found our seats and got ready for the show. Once the stage was lit, the lights were beautiful. And it set the stage for a memorable and magical night. Dare I say — a once in a lifetime experience?!

Rumors and whispers of Tony Bennet and Celine Dion performing traveled around us. But to be honest, it didn’t matter to me. My mother wanted to see Andrea Bocelli.

Once Andrea came on stage, she was happy. So happy she closed her eyes and probably traveled to a place where Andrea Bocelli fans go once they hear his voice. She was listening to him sing Ave Maria live — it’s one of her favorites.

But at intermission we left so she didn’t hear him close with Neesun Dorma. The rain and wind combined with the temperature made the concert a bit uncomfortable. And while we had it much better than the people sitting on the wet Central Park Great Lawn without umbrellas, it was time for us to go. (Although I believe she only left to be nice to me. She probably would have stayed until the end if her daughter wasn’t such a princess wimp.)

And although I now write this with a head cold, I am so happy to have had this experience with my mother. We are able to say we were there for an incredible night with Andrea Bocelli and friends in Central Park.

If you weren’t able to attend Andrea Bocelli’s sold out Central Park concert last night, you can watch it December 2nd on PBS.

Where you also one of the estimated 60,000 people at the concert last night?

Disclosure: Complimentary VIP tickets were provided courtesy of Barilla as part of  my Summer of Italy partnership with them. This review was not required. I just wanted to share my night with you.

I just got back from visiting Casa Barilla at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park.

Its one of the most beautiful and well thought out brand spaces I have ever visited.

You (Yes, you! — It’s open to the public!) can visit Casa Barilla from now until Thursday afternoon and participate in the four day celebration of Italian food and culture.

Between interactive cooking classes, food and culture workshops and children’s activities in Piccolini Playground, it’s well worth the $5 donation to Food Bank New York upon entry.

Visit the Casa Barilla website to find out more about the planned events through Thursday afternoon.

I enjoy making Italian food.

So when Barilla gave me the chance to head on down to Eataly last night for the Simply Healthy pasta cooking class with Barilla Executive Chef Lorenzo Boni, I got my umbrella out and headed down to Mario Batali’s mega Italian culinary emporium.

The Simply Healthy Pasta cooking class was an hour and a half long and was held in La Scoula at Eataly. It was part of a series of cooking classes Chef Boni flew in from Chicago every week to do on Wednesday nights. And this was his last class. I know.. sorry.

I am not a fan of talking about things that are no longer available for others to try. But if you’ve always wanted to take a class at Eataly, they offer quite a few this fall. And while they are not the same class I took, I am pretty sure you will find one you are interested in.

Last night, Chef Boni was the first chef to use the video camera in La Scoula. It was such an intimate room that everyone could see him easily without needing the flat screen to project what he was doing in the pans but it was a nice addition to the room.

I’m weary of taking cooking classes that don’t specify a cooking level. I’m paid by brands to create recipes and cook on their behalf so I am definitely not a beginner level cook.

Last night, I found myself in a room with quite a few people asking very basic cooking questions (“What do you do so an onion doesn’t make you cry?”). And at times, I thought the Chef would be frustrated by the same person asking him to repeat things two and three times but he just kept repeating his answer for them.

Each time I kept wondering why would you pay for a cooking class and not pay attention? But Chef Boni was patient and a great host/teacher. He was also funny showing fear at the idea of his wife coming into La Scoula seeing his messy workspace.

In between going through each of the three recipes, he shared tips on precooking pasta if you are having a dinner party and cannot cook a la minute as well as other cooking shortcuts.

You can meet Chef Boni at Casa Barilla and also during the Andrea Bocelli Central Park concert where he is overseeing all the meals for sale and exclusive complimentary meals in the VIP seating area. I’ll be in attendance. If you see me, please come say Hi.

And now because I think it’s rude to brag, I’d like to do a giveaway for a tote full of Barilla products.

All you have to do is leave a comment with your answer to this question:

“What’s your favorite Italian dish?”

I’ll choose a winner via Random.org at Noon on Tuesday, September 13, 2011.
